Naming: Sunamganj was named after the name of 'Sannamdhi', named after a Mughal soldier. For the heroic achievement in a single war of that Mughal soldier named 'Suramdani' (Regional form of Sunam Uddin), the emperor has been given some land prizes here on the fame of the emperor. Sunamganj market was established in his name on the land he received as his gift. Thus Sunamganj and the origin of the place are considered to be originated. Ancient history: Sunamganj history is very ancient. Rich in numerous legends and historical events and information. Since ancient history it is estimated that the entire region of Sunamganj district was once included in the kingdom of Kamrup or Pragyogytisham of Assam. The parish of Sunamganj is still called as the proverb, the king of Kamarupa was the capital of Lord Bhagat, on the hill of Laura. There are legends that this Bhagat fought in the battle of Kurukshetra for the honor of the warriors. Tangail's Madhupur forest was also known as the symbol of the Rajbari. According to historians, the Bhagavadatta and the Bhagavata of Mahabharata is not a person, but rather the people of the later period of the spoken Bhagatata Mahabharata. This is the truth. Because legends and history are not the same, there is the basis of the history based on the fact that Sylhet was divided into three different independent states in the far past. These states are Laura, Gaur and Jaintia. It is estimated that the border of Laura State was composed of the whole of Sunamganj district and Mymensingh district and part of Habiganj district. Laura was the capital of this state. There is still a sign of the ruins of the residence of King Vijay Singha of Lauras in the village known as Halhaliya of Uttar Baradal Union of Tahirpur Police Station in Sunamganj district. Locally known as Havali (Hawley). The naval base of the lower state was at Dinarpur. It belongs to the present Habiganj district. Historians have found support for the existence of a trunk road that runs throughout the year from the capital, Laaur to the navy. The Deputy Inspector of Schools of Sunamganj, Mr. Mohammad Wasil, uncovered the information from the ruins of the Trunk Road. It is believed that this trunk road was built by connecting the trunk road to the naval area. It is estimated that most of the areas of Sunamganj district were once submerged in the sea, during which time the land was converted into land due to poly-fill and natural changes. There is active support of such thoughts as a result of the discovery of limestone mine and coal in the underground earthquake of Sunamganj. Besides, the support of this opinion has been firmly based on the analysis of basin type of hundreds of haor structures. Limestone is a type of calcium derived from Takerghat in Sunamganj, which is caused by marine ancient snails and algae. According to all the historical sources, the vast land of Sunamganj, which has woken up from the ocean bust, has been identified as the 'Kalidah Sea'. The Kalidah Sea was spread throughout the southern part of Sunamganj district. It is also mentioned in the autobiographical Roznamacha of Raja Choudhury, Khan Bahadur Dewan Ganyoor, the eldest son of Hashan Raja; There are also various regional songs, such as Pala-Parbani programs. Its support is also found in the written description of Sylhet Collector Mr. Lindsay in the eighteenth century. He writes - "In the pre historic days, the southern part of Sadar Subdivision and the northern part of the Moulivibazar and Habiganj Subdivision and almost the entire Sunamganj Subdivision were a part of Bay of Bengal." The haor word comes from Sayr (Sea). In the rainy season Sunamganj haoras still hold that form. In the distant past, the Kalidah Sea extended up to the Bay of Bengal, on which the Chinese traveler Hiuen Shan flew directly to Tamlilipa in Sylhet, in 1011, according to his writings. According to him, a river named Nahari Azarak originated from the hills of Kamarupa and passed through the city of Habang. This river was used to go to Bangla and Gaura. Historians believe that this river is ancient Surma.
