Akananuru (Tamil: akananuru), a classical Tamil poetic work, is the seventh book in the anthology of Sangam literature (600 BCE - 300 CE), namely Ettuthokai. It contains 400 Akam (subjective) poems dealing with matters of love and separation. Other names for Akananuru include Neduntogai or Nedunthokai ( "the long anthology"), Ahappattu, Ahananuru, and Agananuru.

As many as 145 poets are said to have contributed to collection Akananuru. Perunthevanaar, who Mahabharatham translated into the Tamil, is one of the authors. Rudrasarman this anthology compiled at the behest of the Pandya king Ukkiraperuvazhuthi.

It is highly likely that poems in the collection were Akananuru prevalent before they were independently collected and categorized in this present form. The anthology is dated to around the first and the second century CE The poems are probably of a much earlier date. At least few poems must belong to the 5th century BC to 3rd BC on depending poems of structure. There were few mentions of Nanda and Mauryas in poems, which eventually 3rd to 4th centuries BC to date these poems.

This book comes under the Akam (subjective) category in its subject matter. Ancient Tamil poems was categorised into the broad categories of Akam (internal) - Subjective, dealing with matters of the heart and human emotions, and Puram (side) - Objective, dealing with the tangibles of life such as war, politics, wealth, etc . The poems of this anthology are Akaval of the meter.

In the on poems Akam, a hero and a heroine of the aspects of love are depicted. The love story is never conceived of as a continuous whole. A particular moment is captured and described in each poem of love as the hero of the speech or the lady-companion or somebody else. A young man leading a peaceful life with his wife of love and affection is referred as "A bird with two heads and one soul". Women are always referred as Mahilar Mangala, Melliyal Mahalir, Seyelai Mahalir and Manaiyal - all of these soft characterization indicating the presence of women and glorifying folk hold the house during the Sangam period. [4] The wedding was considered to be auspicious time of the harvest season. A high standard of moral virtue of household seems to have prevailed among women.
