Madura Dictionary

Madurese Language (Bhâsa Mâdhurâ) is a language used by the Madurese. Madurese language has speakers of approximately 14 million people, and is centered on Madura Island, the East End of Java Island or in an area called the Horseshoe area stretching from Pasuruan, Surabaya, Malang, to Banyuwangi, Masalembo Islands, to Kalimantan Island. The Kangean language, though allied, is considered a separate language.

On the island of Borneo, the Madurese are concentrated in the Sambas, Pontianak, Bengkayang and Ketapang areas, West Kalimantan, while in Central Kalimantan they concentrate on the Kotawaringin Timur, Palangkaraya and Kapuas areas. However, most young Madurese in the region have not mastered their native language.

Madurese language is a subsidiary of the Austronesian language of the Malay-Polynesian branch, so it has similarities with other regional languages ​​in Indonesia.

Madurese language is much influenced by Javanese (especially Suroboyoan Javanese), Malay, Arabic, Chinese, and several other languages. The influence of the Javanese language was felt in the form of language uploads as a result of the occupation of the Islamic Mataram kingdom over Madura Island. Most of the words in the Madurese language are rooted in Malay, there are even some words that are similar to those in the Minangkabau language, but certainly with different pronunciation. Madurese language has a unique pronunciation system. So unique that people outside Madura who try to learn it also experience difficulties, especially in terms of the pronunciation.

Madurese language has sentak pronunciation and is pressed mainly on consonants [b], [d], [j], [g], jh, dh and bh or in duplicate consonants such as jj, dd and bb. But this emphasis often occurs in the middle syllable.

As for the vocal system, the Madurese language recognizes vowels [a], [i], [u], [e], [ə] and [o].

Ahasa Madura as languages ​​in Java and Bali also recognize levels, but are somewhat different because they are only divided into three levels, namely:

Enje '- iya (same as ngoko)
'Èngghi-Enten (same as Madya)
Èngghi-Bhunten (same as Krama)
