The history of the movie theater "The Royal" begins in 1954 with the construction of the building. It was inaugurated 3 years later, on June 27, 1957, with the screening of the movie "The Tunic". It was at the time the largest cinema ever built in the Valley of the Bruche with a capacity of 555 seats and a huge screen of 45 m2. On the evening of December 31, 1978, after the screening of the film "The Phantom of Black Beard", the room closed its doors victim of the advent of television. The building was then taken over by the municipality of Rothau to be transformed into a multipurpose room.

It was not until 17 years ago to see the creation in December 1995 of a 1901 type association called "Le Royal Cinema". The idea is based on the observation that the municipality of Rothau is fortunate to have a building originally built to be a movie theater. Some equipment is still usable, mainly a balcony of 180 places. On the other hand, constantly repeating that there is nothing in the Valley of the Bruche is not constructive. At one point or another, it is about taking the initiatives that will make things happen.

To release the necessary funds, to obtain the administrative authorizations, ..., the whole team mobilized and worked hard during the following year to defend and carry out its project. The association benefited from many supports and encouragements, the members of the CRCC in the first place thanks to the possibilities of the itinerant circuits. Also important was the reception of the entire population who was overflowing with enthusiasm as soon as it got wind of the project that was emerging.

The Royal "resumed activity on October 18, 1996 with the screening of the films" Flipper "and" Rock ". "Royal Renaissance" or "The Royal, second ...", these were the titles of the newspapers when the Cinema A year after, first anniversary, and first balance also: more than 8,000 entries after 12 months of existence! The success was there, proving if it was necessary that the Valley of the Bruche is alive and that its population responds present when it proposes good shows at the same time distracting and interesting on the cultural level. Many testimonials of satisfaction come to encourage the 26 volunteers ensuring the functioning of the association. It comes out almost unanimously when the quality of the image and a sound that should be perfect in the coming months. It is true that this was one of the major objectives of the association, namely to offer a show of quality, without compromise.

The association did not skimp on the means. The initial investment of 100,000 Frs (15,250 €) was a very important sum that committed the association and its members for several years. Note in passing that without the guarantee of the municipality of Rothau this investment could not have taken place. Regular investments have been made since opening to constantly improve the quality of the show and comfort.
