Environment and Public Health aims to meet the growing need for training and information in the field of environmental health, particularly for university students, professionals working in the field of public health and the environment, prevention agents in business and doctors. We believe that it will also be useful to any individual with a basic scientific background, looking for objective information, and interested in touring the garden of this complex but exciting area. This manual is the result of a somewhat risky gamble: at a time when it is thought to find everything on the Internet, bring together in a coherent subject a vast subject covering the knowledge, methods and practices of public health applicable to the environment and emanating from the natural and human sciences as medicine. But environmental health did not give us a choice. Since the 1960s and 1970s, the ecological impact of pollution has been the source of many movements that humans often lack as living species in the ecosystem. In recent years, however, it is the environment-human health relationship that is a major concern in the population and intervention by government authorities: contaminated soils, emissions from landfills, destruction of the ozone layer, warming global, food contamination, radiation emitted by household appliances, new biological hazards ... While several problems correspond to situations of significant risk for the population, several others reflect concerns that may not be justified on the basis of scientific knowledge and data collected in the field. Thus, an objective method based on the tools of toxicology, epidemiology and risk analysis makes it possible to evaluate and relativize the importance of risk. In addition, the public health approach makes it possible to propose means of prevention and intervention adapted to the various cases. Born from the merger of convergent projects aimed at providing the Francophone world with a tool it lacked, this book is the result of an innovative collaboration between the best French-speaking specialists on both sides of the Atlantic. Although its content is most often, when it comes to scientific knowledge, outside national contexts, it can not - and should not - be completely detached from it in practice. We believe that differences in approach are rewarding. The architecture of the five-part work was conceived according to the polymor-phe nature of environmental health and the interested public: need to define the domain as a complex intersection (first part), presenting the main disciplines, including the humanities (2nd part), describing exposure environments and chemical, physical and biological aggressors (part 3), grouping the effects according to the major systems and organs of the human body (Part 4) and to highlight aspects related to the practice and management of environmental health (Part 5).
