Around the Nile Valley, 5,000 years ago, one of the most brilliant civilizations of humanity flourished: that of Pharaonic Egypt. The history of Egypt does not is no less eventful (revolutions, foreign invasions). The richness of Egyptian civilization rests on the strong personality of its pharaohs, on its solid administrative organization, on the fruitful contributions of the Nile and on the dedication and creativity of the people.


1. CURRENT EGYPT

Geography

Egypt is in northeastern Africa.

There are 84 million inhabitants of which 8.5 million live in Cairo, the capital (it is the most populated city of Egypt).

Egypt is divided into 4 major regions

- Lower Egypt

- The average-Egypt

- Upper Egypt

- Nubia

The Nile crosses Egypt from south to north and flows into the Mediterranean. The population is at the edge of it because the climate is hot and dry.

Description

Egypt is a very touristic country thanks to its pyramids built at the time of the pharaohs.

Egypt is a poor country ruled by Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, who is its president. The currency is the Egyptian pound.

The population speaks Egyptian, a language close to Arabic.

 

Food

Egyptian cuisine is made from local agricultural products: bread, vegetables, fruits, eggs, poultry. Egyptian cuisine is a mix of many Mediterranean specialties (Turkish, Greek and Lebanese).

During prehistory, the country was divided into several regions that will later be brought together into two distinct countries: Upper Egypt (in the North) and Lower Egypt (in the South). Around 2920 BC, the King of Upper Egypt, Narmer (also called Menes), fought his enemies and proclaimed himself Pharaoh. Now, the two countries are one. It is also at this moment, that appear the first hieroglyphs, which marks the beginning
of antiquity. The Egyptian religion punctuates the life of the Egyptians. The main gods are grouped in the same myth: the myth of Osiris.

The myth of Osiris: According to Egyptian beliefs, Osiris, who reigned over Egypt, was killed by his brother, Seth who was jealous. Osiris is then cut into several pieces. Fortunately, his wife, Isis, was able to find the body parts, and reconstituted the body of Osiris, mummified it and resurrected it. Osiris then became the ruler of the realm of the dead.
Pharaohs had pyramids built to make their tombs. They were buried there with all their riches, which is why we found real treasures when we discovered these tombs. Egyptians believing in a life in the afterlife, men and especially Pharaohs had to keep their goods!
