Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child Marriage (CR) are harmful practices deeply rooted in traditional cultures and rooted in gender inequalities and poverty. Despite the resolutions of the United Nations and Pan-African organizations, as well as national legislation criminalizing FGM in the majority of African countries, these practices remain widespread in the continent.

According to the African Union, child marriage is a customary, religious or legal marriage of any person under 18 years of age. It takes place before a girl or boy is physically and psychologically ready to take on the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood.

More than 200 million women and girls continue to be affected by FGM worldwide and in Africa, current estimates suggest that 50 million girls may be affected by 2030. Around the world, around 1 in 4 women got married before the age of 18. While data from 47 countries show that in general the median age at first marriage is gradually increasing, the pace of change remains slow overall. While 48% of women between the ages of 45 and 49 were married before the age of 18, their proportion has only dropped to 35% among women between the ages of 20 and 24. Child marriages remain especially a reality for millions of children (especially girls) across Africa, which has the second highest rate in the world after South Asia, with the devastating consequences that this can have. their education, health and future prospects.

In some African countries, mobilizations have led to lower prevalence rates of FGM and ME. However, despite the favorable legal environment, the impact of legislation often runs counter to harmful traditional practices and religious beliefs carried by religious and / or community leaders whose influence weighs more than the prohibitions of states. .

To reinforce these achievements, the Senegalese Government and the Gambian Government are co-organizing, in collaboration with the Big Sisters movement and the NGO Safe Hands for Girls, the 1st African Summit on FGM and EM. The Summit, scheduled for 16, 17 and 18 June 2019 in Dakar, will involve Heads of State and Government, technical and financial partners, religious and traditional authorities, civil society organizations, survivors and organizations. young people whose influence already helps to reduce the prevalence of these two harmful practices.

This meeting is organized by the Senegalese and Gambian governments, in partnership with the NGO Safe Hands For Girls.

This first Summit will see the participation of "high-level personalities" from 17 African countries, heads of state and government, representatives of continental institutions, UN agencies, civil society, experts, as well as survivors, young people, opinion leaders, religious and traditional leaders ".

Five hundred participants will discuss "Strengthening the bridge between Africa and the rest of the world to accelerate the zero tolerance of female genital mutilation and child marriage, a major focus of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
