L'Étranger is Albert Camus' first novel, published in 1942. It takes place in the tetralogy that Camus will call "cycle of the absurd" which describes the foundations of Camusian philosophy: the absurd. This tetralogy also includes the essay titled The Myth of Sisyphus as well as the plays Caligula and The Misunderstanding.

The novel has been translated into sixty-eight languages, it is the third most read French novel in the world, after The Little Prince of Saint-Exupery and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea of Jules Verne. A film adaptation was made by Luchino Visconti in 1967.

*characters :

-Meursault: main character.

-The main Arabe: killed by Meursault five shots. Brother of the mistress of Raymond. Camus does not specify his name.

-Emmanuel: colleague of Meursault's work.

-Céleste: friend of Meursault and manager of a restaurant frequented regularly by this last one.

-The concierge: concierge of the asylum where lived "mother" (Mrs. Meursault, mother of Meursault).

-The director: he manages the asylum where "mom" was interned.

-The boss: he employs Meursault in his company. He is reluctant to grant Meursault days off to allow him to attend the funeral of his mother.

-Thomas Pérez: a companion of asylum of the mother of Meursault.

-Marie Cardona: Meursault's girlfriend, she plays an important role in Meursault's career, whose indolence and lack of emotionality she sheds light on.

-Salamano: old man living on the same level as Meursault, he beats his dog but is panicked when it disappears.

-Raymond Sintès: Meursault's neighbor, he is the key element in the course of events.

-Masson: Raymond's friend, he takes part indirectly in events on the beach.
A group of Arabs: composed around the brother of the mistress of Raymond, the one that Meursault kills.

-The judge of instruction: fervent believer, he questions Meursault several times about the murder as on his soul.

-The lawyer: he tries to make beautiful sentences without defending Meursault in particular.
-The prosecutor: he depicts Meursault through his oratorical speeches and managed to get him sentenced to death.

-The chaplain: he seeks to convert Meursault before his death, however it does not succeed but is received all the anger of Meursault
