Pantun is one type of old poetry that is very widely known in the languages of the archipelago. Pantun comes from the word pat guides in the Minangkabau language which means "guide". Pantun has another name in regional languages: in Javanese, pantun is known as papangkap; in Sundanese, pantun is called papangkap; and in the Batak language, pantun is known as umpasa. Typically, the poem consists of four lines (or four lines if written), each laeik consists of 8-12 syllables, rhyming end with a-b-a-b [1] or a-a-a-a (not a-a-b-b or a-b-a) pattern. The poem was originally an oral literature, but now it is also found written rhymes. Another characteristic of a poem is that it does not give the name of the composer. This is because the spread of rhymes is done verbally.

All forms of rhymes consist of two parts: the sampiran and the contents. Attachments are the first two lines, often related to nature or life (often characterizing the agrarian culture of the composer), and usually have no connection with the second part which conveys intent other than to deliver rhyme / poetry. The last two lines are content, which is the aim of the pantun.

Karmina and Talibun are forms of pantun developments. Karmina is the "short version" pantun (only two lines), while the Talibun is the "long version" (six or more lines).
As a language preservation tool, rhymes act as guardians of word functions and the ability to maintain the flow of thought. Pantun trains someone to think about the meaning of the word before speaking. Pantun also trains people to think associatively, that a word can have links with other words. Socially, pantun has a strong social function, even now. Among today's youth, the ability to rant is usually valued. Pantun shows a person's speed in thinking and playing with words.

In general, the social role of rhymes is as a means of strengthening the delivery of messages. The closeness of social values and rhymes even starts from the philosophy of rhyme itself. "Adat is chanting, abstinence" is a philosophy inherent in rhymes. This proverb implies that pantun is attached to social values and not merely imagination [2]. Effensi (2005) notes the spirit of "the nature of rhymes being a guide" to rhymes. This explanation reinforces the function of rhymes as guardians and cultural media to introduce and preserve community values
