Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in 1987 in Berkeley, California. The band consists of a trio of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool. Green Day is highly acclaimed for their success in making the punk rock genre famous again, together with Sublime, The Offspring, and Rancid.

In 1990, along with their first drummer, John Kiffmeyer aka Al Sobrante, Green Day recorded their first album, 39 / Smooth. But in the same year, Tre Cool replaced drummer John Kiffmeyer who left because he wanted to continue his studies. Tré Cool then began contributing to Green Day's second album, Kerplunk, and has been a permanent member ever since. Green Day's breakthrough album, Dookie, released in 1994, managed to get diamond status from the RIAA and bring Green Day to the peak of their careers. However, contrary to Dookie, the next three Green Day albums, successively Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning, failed to get success like Dookie. Although Insomniac and Nimrod managed to get platinum status and Warning got gold status, the three albums actually showed their overall popularity dropped dramatically. Their 2004 opera rock album, American Idiot, which restored their popularity, especially with fans of the younger generation. American Idiot sold more than 5 million copies in the United States alone. Their eighth album, 21st Century Breakdown, was released in 2009 and managed to get the best chart performance throughout Green Day's career. Green Day plans to release a trilogy album within five months from September 2012. [6] All three albums are named 'Uno !,' Dos !, and 'Tré !.

Green Day has sold more than 65 million copies of their album worldwide with 24,639 million in the United States alone. Green Day has won 5 Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Best Rock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording.
