Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by reduced bone density. It is a chronic bone disease associated with increased fracture risk and, consequently, reduced quality of life, in addition to fracture-related morbidity and mortality.
This disease represents a growing economic challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. It is estimated that osteoporosis affects more than 41% of women and 18% of men over the age of 50, where 1 in 3 will have fractures in the course of the disease.
It is possible to diagnose osteoporosis before fracture occurs by measuring bone mineral density (BMD) by the Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry technique.
Effective forms of osteoporosis prevention are available in the form of medications, calcium supplementation, dietary changes and exercise.
Mobile phones, such as mHealth, are suitable for use as a self-management health platform because they are ubiquitous, have a high processing power and are commonly carried by people most of the time.
In addition, mHealth technologies can facilitate access to self-monitoring information, time-sensitive health information, requests, reminders, and custom self-management tools.
Patients are often treated with misleading information about their health problems, often obtained through gray literature, on search websites and blogs. A mobile app, with up-to-date information from trusted sources, with evidence-based medicine at your fingertips can provide patients with the information they want without risk.
