What is the cat?

The cat (Felis silvestris catus), also known as home cat, urban cat or domestic cat, is a carnivorous mammal of the feline family, very popular as a pet. Occupying the top of the food chain, it is a natural predator of various animals such as rodents, birds, geckos and some insects.

The first known association with humans occurred about 9,500 years ago, a period longer than previously estimated, which ranged from 3,500 to 8,000 years. The Felinae subfamily, which groups domestic cats, emerged about 12 million years ago, expanding from sub-Saharan Africa to the lands of present-day Egypt. The African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica) is believed to be his immediate ancestor and genetic evidence indicates that current domestic cats share a direct origin with wild cats from the Middle East.

There are about 250 domestic cat breeds, whose weight ranges from 2.5 to 12 kg classifies the species as a small to medium sized domestic animal. As with dog breeds that have this same weight range, the domestic cat can live between fifteen and twenty years.

Due to its independent personality, it has become a companion animal in many homes around the world, pleasing people of all walks of life. In human culture, it figures from mythology to superstitions, passing through cartoon characters, newspaper strips, movies, and fairy tales.

According to research conducted by US institutions, cats are the second most popular pet in the world, second only to aquarium fish. Census data show that in the US there are more domestic cats than dogs.
