একটি দেশের মূল ভিত্তি হচ্ছে সে দেশের আইন। আইন ছাড়া কোন দেশের নিয়ম শৃংখলা বজায় রাখা সম্ভব নয়। দেশের আভ্যন্তরীন শান্তি-শৃঙ্খলা বজায় রাখার জন্য বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্ন ধরণের আইন প্রণয়ন করা হয়েছে।
আইন হলো বিভিন্ন নিয়ম কানুনের সমষ্টি যা মানুষের আচার আচরন নিয়ন্ত্রণের উদ্দেশে প্রণয়ন করা হয়ে থাকে। বাংলাদেশের বেশির ভাগ মানুষ আইন জানে না। আইন সম্পর্কে জানার আগ্রহও নেই অনেকের। অনেকে মনে করেন আইন বিচার অপরাধ শাস্তি এসব আইনের ছাত্র, শিক্ষক ও আইনজীবীদেরই চিন্তা ভাবনার বিষয়। কিন্তু এ ধারণা ভুল। আইন কানুন সম্পর্কে না জানলে যে কোন মুহুর্তে বিপদে দিশেহারা হয়ে যেতে পারেন। আমরা কেউ আইনের বাহিরে নই এবং আইনের অজ্ঞতা আমাদের জন্য খুবই ক্ষতিকর একটি বিষয়। এই অজ্ঞতার কারনে আমরা নানা সম্যার সমুক্ষীন হতে পারি।
আইন জানার প্রয়োজনীয়তা সম্পর্কে বলা হয় ‘Ignorance of law excuses no one - অর্থ্যাৎ আইন না জানার জন্য কোন ক্ষমা নেই কিংবা আইন না জানা কোন অযুহাত হতে পারে না। সুতরাং একটি দেশের নাগরিক হিসেবে ওই দেশের প্রচলিত আইন-কানুন সম্পর্কে জানা প্রত্যেক জনগণেরই দায়িত্ব ও কর্তব্য। আমাদের সকলেরই স্মরণ রাখা প্রয়োজন আইন জানাই বড় বিষয় নয় বরং আইন জানার পাশাপাশি আইন মান্য করা হচ্ছে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়।
