The study of Islamic religious knowledge basically addresses two main points. First, about what Muslims must believe in their lives. Knowledge about this then developed into "Science" Aqeedah ". Second, about what Muslims must practice in their lives. Knowledge about this then developed into "Sharia Knowledge". Sharia is basically contains two main things.

First, about the material provisions that must be done by a Muslim in an effort to find happiness in the world and in the hereafter. This war of matter, simply referred to as "Fiqh". Second, about the methods, efforts, and provisions in producing the fiqh material. The second thing, simply, is called "Usul Fiqh". Thus, Usul Fiqh is an inseparable part of Islamic religious knowledge. Usul fiqh is studied in line with studying fiqh and he teaches it in line with fiqh lessons.

Usul fiqh is the main subject in the science of Islamic religion. Therefore, he is taught in every religious education institution or madrasa at the Tsanawiyah and Aliah levels.

Even the basic fundamentals have been given at the Ibtidaiah level.

Specifically at the Islamic Higher Education level (IAIN and PTAIS), according to the latest curriculum set by the Director General of Religious Institutional Development, Ministry of Religion, in 1995, ushul fiqh was given in all faculties and each department with differences in weighting SKS- his. This means that every student at PTAIN or PTAIS must study Usul Fiqh, albeit to a different degree. For the Tsanawiah and Aliah levels, the lessons of Usul Fiqh are given in a simple form. For the purposes of this level of education, it is relatively easy to find usul ul fiqh textbooks written in Indonesian.
