The app Augmented Space allows a virtual time travel. Starting with an aerial view of the duty-free warehouse, the tour continues through the history of its earlier use to the present. The current scenery is superimposed with historical images, allowing a simultaneous experience of the past and the present.
To get access to the 3D tour, scan the historic aerial view of the bonded warehouse in the book Augmented Spaces and Maps on page 227.

The Basel duty-free warehouse was built at the beginning of the 20th century. On the Dreispitz area, an area southwest of the center of Basel, was since 1901 a public material store. In order to cope with the growing flow of goods and goods, the Federal Council around 1920 decided to build a warehouse on the site for the storage of duty-free goods. 1922 was the founding of the Basler Freilager Society, which began operating in 1923. About half a century later, with the liberalization of the customs clearance formalities of 1985, the Basel customs free warehouse - like all free warehouses - in its former form lost importance for the import and export of goods. It was finally abandoned around the year 2000 and since 2015 the area has included the FHNW Academy of Art and Design, the HEK, the House of Electronic Arts and the library of the Basel School of Design.

The Augmented Space application was developed in collaboration between the Institute for Experimental Design and Media Cultures, University of Art and Design and the Institute of Geomatics, University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland. The application is part of the Augmented Space project (2015-2019), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), which explored from a design-centered perspective how the progressive digitization will affect and affect our surrounding world and spaces. An expanded prototype of the augmented reality application (not yet available) offers a historical perspective on the campus of the arts beyond the virtual tour and combines this view with a contemporary critique of the practice of today's duty-free bonded warehouse.
