Salam contract is a form of contract in muamalah fiqh. The greetings referred to here are not greetings which means peace or greetings. The greetings referred to in this discussion consist of three letters: sin-lam-mim (سلم), which means submission and does not mean peace.

From this greeting word the term Islam has roots, one of which means surrender. While the word salam which means peace consists of 4 letters, sin-lam-alif-mim (سلام).

The term salam (سلم) is often also referred to as salaf (سلف). In most prophetic traditions, the term that seems to be used more is salaf. But in the book of fiqh, greetings are more often used.

1. Language
In language, salam (سلم) is al-i'tha '(الإعطاء) and at-taslif (التسليف). Both are meaningful giving.

The phrase aslama ats-tsauba lil al-khayyath means: he has handed over his clothes to the tailor. 1

2. Terms
Whereas in sharia terms, a salam agreement is often defined by the fuqaha in general being

Sale and purchase of goods which are mentioned in nature in dependents in return (payment) made immediately.

In easy language, the contract is essentially trading with debt. But the difference, what is owed is not the payment money, but the goods. Whereas the payment money was actually handed over in cash.

So this greeting agreement is the opposite of credit. When buying and selling credit, the goods are given in advance and the payment becomes debt. While the salaf contract, the money is given up first while the goods have not been handed over and become debt.
