Provisions of Prostration Tilawah

A. Understanding

Sujud Tilawah is a term consisting of two basic words, namely prostration and recitation; both of which are from Arabic.

Eternal etymology comes from the word َد َ جَس - ُدُجْسَي -
سَجْدَةً which means submitting and humbling yourself. While terminologically means a movement by putting the forehead on the ground; which this movement is not foreign to us.

While the word recitation comes from the word تَل -يَتْلُو

which means reading, this term is more often used in the sense of reading the Qur'an.

Of the two meanings above, the meaning of recitation of prostration is prostration caused by reading verses from the Qur'an. Namely carrying out prostration every time after reading verses sajdah.

The scholars sometimes use the term prostration of the Qur'an instead of prostration tilawah1. Although the truth is the complete prostration of the Qur'an.

B. Tilawah Prostration Law

The scholars agree that the prostration of recitation is a practice that is prescribed, but they differ in opinion about the law, is it obligatory or sunna?

Syafi'i and Hambali schools argue that prostration under the law is sunnah muakadah, as the word of God:

Say: "Believe in him or you do not have to believe (it's the same for Allah). Those who have been given prior knowledge when the Qur'an is recited to them, they bow down on their faces while prostrating, And they say:" Glory be to our Lord, surely our Lord's promise must be fulfilled ".
