In understanding the notion of Islamic law, there are important terms that can be used namely: sharia, fiqh, and Islamic law itself. The use of these three terms is sometimes exchanged because of incorrect understanding. Therefore, it is necessary to explain in advance the meaning or understanding of each of these terms and their relationship, especially the relationship between sharia and fiqh.

a. Sharia

Understanding Islamic Law

From the origin of the word, sharia comes from the word al-shari'ah which means 'the way to the source of water' or the path that must be followed, namely the path to the main source of life (Al-Fairuzabadiy, 1995: 659).

The word sharia is equated with the way of water given that whoever follows sharia will flow and clean his soul (Amir Syarifuddin, 1999, I: 1).

In terminology, sharia is defined as the rules set by God to be used by humans in relation to their God, with their fellow Muslims, with their fellow humans, with nature, and in relation to their lives (Syaltut, 1966: 12).

Sharia is also defined as all the religious rules established by Allah for Muslims both those stipulated by the Qur'an and by the Sunnah of the Apostles (Musa, 1988: 31).

From a number of definitions of sharia above it can be understood that sharia is the rules of Allah SWT and the Messenger of Allāh mengatur governing humans in dealing with their Lord and with each other.

b. Jurisprudence

The word fiqh comes from the word al-fiqh which means understanding or knowledge of something (Al-Fairuzabadiy, 1995: 1126). In terminology, fiqh is defined as the knowledge of the laws of shari'ah which is amaliyah (practical) which is extracted from detailed propositions (Khallaf, 1978: 11; Zahrah, 1958: 6).

From this definition can be taken some understanding that fiqh is a science that discusses the laws of sharia 'especially those that are amaliyah by basing on detailed arguments from the Qur'an and Hadith. Therefore. the meaning of fiqh is different from sharia both in terms of etymology and terminology.
