This app has been developed for the students of Built Environment (BE) subjects at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. It is intended to teach students about the operation of a hydraulic excavator and for them to practice the controls. The experience includes a series of tutorials and lets the students control the model via a set of on-screen joysticks. The 3D model can be placed on a surface in the real-world using augmented reality (AR) technology, allowing the student to observe it with spatial perspective and drive it around the room. Students will then be able to practice digging with the excavator before translating their skills from this digital twin to the scale physical remote-control model at UNSW.
