(Sesungguhnya bilangan bulan pada sisi Allah adalah dua belas bulan, dalam ketetapan Allah di waktu Dia menciptakan langit dan bumi, di antaranya empat bulan haram (Zulkaedah, Zulhijjah, Muharram, Rejab). Itulah (ketetapan) agama yang lurus, maka janganlah kamu menganiaya diri kamu dalam bulan yang empat itu dan perangilah kaum Musyrikin itu semuanya sebagaimana mereka pun memerangi kamu semuanya, dan ketahuilah bahawasanya Allah beserta orang-orang yang bertaqwa). (Surah Al-Taubah : 36)

Dua belas bulan yang disebut oleh Allah di dalam ayat di atas telah dihuraikan oleh Rasulullah SAW di dalam sebuah hadith yang telah diceritakan oleh Saidina Abu Bakar as-Siddiq r.a bahawa Rasulullah SAW memberikan khutbah ketika ibadah haji dengan berkata:

Ketahuilah bahawa masa berputar seperti mana hari Allah menciptakan langit dan bumi, setahun ada 12 bulan antaranya empat bulan haram, tiga daripadanya berturutan iaitu Zulkaedah, Zulhijjah, Muharam dan Rejab yang terletak antara Jumada dan Syaaban. (Hadis Riwayat Imam Ahmad)

Bulan dalam bahasa Arab disebut "Al-Syahru" bermaksud bulan yang merujuk kepada bulan-bulan yang terdapat dalam Islam yang dipanggil bulan-bulan Hijriyah. Tarikh Hijriyah Islam yang pertama adalah bermula ketika Nabi Muhammad SAW serta umat Islam telah sampai dan berhijrah ke Madinah. Nama-nama bulan Arab yang telah diiktiraf sebagai bulan Islam dan telah dirasmikan penggunaannya oleh Saidina Umar al-Khattab r.a

Umat Muslim amat perlu berhijrah menggunakan kalender Hijriyah dalam setiap kegiatannya. Seperti kalender di rumahnya, catatan di buku harian, dan dalam surat-menyurat. Untuk permulaan boleh membiasakan menulis tarikh masehi dengan disertakan penyamaan tarikh hijriyahnya.
