Problem
Air pollution has gradually become a burning problem in Hungary in recent years, and especially in our city of Nyíregyháza. A sign of this is that infringement proceedings have been initiated against our city on several occasions. The air quality of the City of Nyíregyháza is constantly monitored 24 hours a day by the automatic measuring station operating in Széna Square. Official measurement data related to air quality can be viewed on the website www.levegominoseg.hu.
The health limit value is most severely exceeded for airborne dust (PM10). PM10 comes mainly from unprofessional residential heating as well as diesel vehicles. In addition to effective action against residential lignite combustion and illicit waste incineration, as well as large-scale improvements in the energy efficiency of buildings, extensive replacement and modernization of heating systems would greatly improve PM10 emissions.
Determining the temporal and spatial distribution of PM10 (possibly PM2.5) values is key to both disease prevention and monitoring and the design of measures to make the city livable. Such as e.g. urban transport planning, increasing green space, and identifying sources of pollution.
Solution
In search of solutions to the above problems, the city, high school students, university students, urban planners, professional organizations joined the Climathon movement. Within improving air quality, the city has identified 5 challenges, which are: measurement, data collection; awareness; transport; green space development; regulation. We have undertaken to provide the technical background in the field of measurement and data collection.
The aim of the project is to develop and build a low-cost tool for measuring PM10 pollution so that the data can be easily compared with similar data measured elsewhere, so the measurement process follows a precise protocol. The box containing the microcontroller and the sensors sends the data to the server where they are stored, but can even be displayed immediately.
A test measurement
The brain of our system is provided by a Raspberry Pi 3 microcomputer. We used to work with this tool so we know it and all the ports are useful for us. The most important part is a Honeywell HPM Series sensor, which is able to detect particles that are important to us so that we can transfer them to the database. Since we want to do more moving data collection in the city, it is very important to get accurate data about the location of the sensor, which is why we would also include a GPS module. Communication would also be provided by this GPRS module, so we create a compact device.
Future
In the future, we want to put these gauges on buses to map the pollution of the city. Public transport is relatively dense, and with the help of flights on a given route at specific times, we could obtain very accurate data. According to our surveys, a lot of city dwellers would like to take part in the measurement, even if e.g. they would mount the gauge on their bike and would like to receive feedback on the contamination. How can a city dweller help us defend ourselves and keep our city clean? An application is also planned to support the use of public transport / walking / cycling by residents. With this, points are earned, and these points are rewarded with it, and these would be spent on planting trees, so the resident is also motivated.
