The Sign of The Four - Sherlock Holmes Detective Story

The Sign of the Four, also called The Sign of Four, is the second novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring Sherlock Holmes as a detective.

This novel was first published in 1890. Although written more than 100 years ago, the writing style is modern. The sentences are not ‘Victorian’.

Sherlock Holmes is assisted by his friend Dr. Watson who narrates the tale that sees the detective tracking down hidden treasure and murderers.

The Sign of the Four introduces Doctor Watson's future wife, Mary Morstan. Miss Mary Morstan arrived at 221B, Baker Street to request help with the mystery of her missing father, her anonymous gifts of pearls and a letter requesting her to meet an unknown person asking her to be outside the Lyceum Theatre that evening.
Holmes takes on her case and the adventure of finding the hidden treasure begins.

There are 12 chapters in the novel. The first chapter establishes the main characters and the second chapter introduces the mystery of hidden treasure and murder.

The Sign of the Four Sherlock Holmes Detective story has a complex plot involving service in India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts (""the Four"" of the title) and two corrupt prison guards.

In this book The Sign of The Four, as with other Sherlock Holmes Detective Story, you will find the signature Holmes traits: meticulous study of a crime scene, brilliant deductive reasoning, aptitude for chemistry and music, and the somewhat annoying habit of withholding crucial facts from Watson (and consequently the reader) until the conclusion of the case.

An extract from the book, reads as follows

"How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth? We know that he did not come through the door, the window, or the chimney. We also know that he could not have been concealed in the room, as there is no concealment possible. When, then, did he come?"

In total, Doyle wrote four novels and 56 short stories featuring the fictional detective.

There have been multiple film and television adaptations of the book, but nothing compares to reading the original stories from the book itself.

If you love reading thrillers, mysteries and crimes, this book is for you. And, if you are reading to brush up your vocabulary, then you won't be disappointed with this book as it is full of superb vocabulary.
