Albert Einstein (Ulm, March 14, 1879 - Princeton, April 18, 1955) was a German theoretical physicist who developed the theory of general relativity, one of the pillars of modern physics alongside quantum mechanics. Although best known for its mass-energy equivalence formula, {\ displaystyle E = mc ^ {2}} E = mc ^ 2 - which was called "the most famous equation in the world" - was awarded the Nobel Prize for 1921 physics "for its contributions to theoretical physics" and especially for its discovery of the law of photoelectric effect, which was instrumental in the establishment of quantum theory.

Born into a family of German Jews, he moved to Switzerland at a young age and began his studies at the Zurich Polytechnic School. After two years looking for a job, he obtained a position at the Swiss Patent Office while entering the doctorate course at the University of Zurich. In 1905 he published a series of revolutionary scholarly articles. One of his works was the development of the theory of special relativity. He realized, however, that the principle of relativity could also be extended to gravitational fields, and with his later theory of gravitation in 1916 published an article on the theory of general relativity. While accumulating positions at universities and institutions, he continued to deal with problems of statistical mechanics and quantum theory, which led to his explanations of particle theory and Brownian motion. It also investigated the thermal properties of light, which laid the foundations of photon theory. In 1917, he applied the theory of general relativity to model the structure of the universe as a whole. His works earned him worldwide celebrity status as he became a new figure in human history, receiving international awards and being invited by heads of state and authorities.

He was in the United States when the Nazi Party came to power in Germany in 1933 and did not return to his home country where he had been a professor at the Berlin Academy of Sciences. He then settled in the country, where he was naturalized in 1940. On the eve of World War II, he helped alert President Franklin Delano Roosevelt that Germany might be developing an atomic weapon, advising Americans to begin similar research, which led to what would become the Manhattan Project. It supported the Allied forces, but denounced the use of nuclear fission as a weapon. Later, with the British philosopher Bertrand Russell, he signed the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, which highlighted the danger of nuclear weapons. He was affiliated with the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies, where he worked until his death in 1955.

He made several trips around the world, gave public lectures at prestigious universities, and met celebrities of his day, both in science and outside the academic world. He has published over 300 scientific works, along with over 150 unscientific works. His great intellectual achievements and originality made the word "Einstein" synonymous with genius. In 1999 was elected by 100 renowned physicists the most memorable physicist of all time. In the same year TIME magazine, in a compilation with the most important and influential people, classified him as the person of the twentieth century.
