Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Mvezo, July 18, 1918 - Johannesburg, December 5, 2013) was a lawyer, rebel leader, and president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, regarded as the most important leader of Black Africa, winner of the Prize. Nobel Peace Prize winner 1993, [1] and father of the modern South African nation, [2] where he is commonly referred to as Madiba (his clan's name) or "Tata" ("Father").

Born to a family of tribal nobility, in a small village in the countryside where he was likely to occupy leadership, he turned down this fate at the age of 23 by moving to the capital, Johannesburg, and starting his political career. [3] Moving from the countryside to a rebellious college life, he became a young lawyer in the capital and leader of the youth's nonviolent resistance, ending up as a defendant in an infamous trial for treason. Outlaw, he later became the most famous prisoner in the world [4] and finally the most awarded politician in life, responsible for the refoundation of his country as a multiethnic society. [5]

Mandela spent 27 years in prison - initially on Robben Island and later in the prisons of Pollsmoor and Victor Verster. After an international campaign, he was released in 1990, when the civil war in his country was escalating. In December 2013, it was revealed by The New York Times that the US CIA was the decisive force for Mandela's arrest in 1962, when US agents were employed to assist South African security forces in locating him. ] By 2009, he had dedicated 67 years of his life to the case he advocated as a human rights lawyer and for which he became a prisoner of a racial segregation regime until he was elected the first president of free South Africa. In its honor, the United Nations instituted Nelson Mandela International Day on its birth day, July 18, as a way of valuing the struggle for freedom, justice and democracy around the world. [7]

Mandela was a controversial figure for much of his life. Denounced as a Communist terrorist by his critics, [8] [9] he was internationally acclaimed for his activism and received more than 250 awards and decorations, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Lenin Order of the Soviet Union. His critics point to his egocentric traits and the fact that his government has been friends with dictators sympathetic to the African National Congress (CNA). In his private life, he faced personal drama but remained faithful to his duty to lead his country. [10] It was the most powerful symbol of the struggle against the segregationist regime of Apartheid, a racist system made official in 1948, and a worldwide model of resistance. [1] [11] Ali Abdessalam Treki, President of the United Nations General Assembly, said "one of the greatest moral and political leaders of our time." [12] Received the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Outstanding Public Service 2000.
