About the book

The beggar boy at the Christmas tree (in Russian: Мальчик у Христа на ёлке) is a short story written by Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Dostoyevsky wrote the story in January 1876, and was published the same month included in "The Writer's Notes." Dostoyevsky was inspired by the story of a beggar boy he met on the streets of Saint Petersburg. The story begins with the author saying that he fabricated the events of this story, but he believes it really happened somewhere. The story takes place on Christmas Eve, in a big town, and in a very frosty atmosphere. The story follows a beggar boy at the age of six or younger, who wakes up in a freezing cellar, and when he reaches his mother he finds a cold corpse more cold than the cellar walls. The boy exits the place, and it seems that the town is not familiar to him, as he has just arrived from a remote village, and this is the first time that he witnesses the congestion of a vital city, especially during the celebration times since this is Christmas Eve. As he walks through the streets of the city, he goes through a fun party, with children dancing, and attends to a beautiful girl at the party, then goes forward to meet another party, with many children, and more people enter. The boy finds the courage to enter it, but people inside the room are screaming above him, waving at him to get out of the party, a woman urgently brings him to the door and puts in his hands a coin, but his frozen fingers are unable to carry it and he drops it immediately. The boy walks again in the street and stops at a dollhouse to watch from the window. The boy finds pleasure in watching the dolls, but his enjoyment lasted only moments when an older boy hit him on the head and stole his hat, the boy stands and escapes to the yard of a neighboring house and hides beside a pile of wood. Suddenly the boy feels happy, hears his mother's voice singing, and a weak voice inviting him to see the Christmas tree, the boy finds himself at a party, and finds his mother there, and other children have suffered a similar fate similar to his fate, and then knows that this is the Christmas tree of Christ. The story ends with the author saying that he composed this story because he believes that it actually happened, but then he explains that he is certain of the first part, but the second part of the tree of Christ is not yet sure.
