Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, widely known as Allama Iqbal, was a poet, philosopher, barrister, and politician. Allama Iqbal is also known as national poet of Pakistan. His lectures and letters in Urdu and English on social & cultural issues and on religious & political disputes are as popular and effective as his poetry.
Allama Iqbal Urdu poetry consists of four books Bang-e-Dara (The Call of the Marching Bell), Bal-e-Jibreel (Gabriel's Wing), Zarb-e-Kaleem (The Rod of Moses) and Armaghan-e-Hijaz (The Gift of Hijaz). His large portion of poetry work is in Persian. Allama Iqbal Persian poetry work consist of seven books Asrar-e-Khudi (The Secrets of Selflessness), Rumuz-e-Bekhudi (The Mysteries of Selflessness), Zabur-e Ajam (Persian Psalms), Payam-e-Mashriq (A Message From the East), Javaid-Nama (Javed Namah) and Armaghan-e-Hijaz (The Gift of Hijaz).
Bang-e-Dara (The Call of the Marching Bell):
Published in 1924, this book was written by Iqbal in almost twenty years before he moved to England. This book has famous poems like Shikwa (The Complaint), Jawab-e-Shikwa (The Response to the Complaint) and the National anthem of Hindustan. Poems were written while his stay in England describes the lifestyle of the West and its flaws. He also mentioned his lifestyle as per Islam while his stay in the West. The third part consists of poems written between 1908 to 1923. In this duration, Iqbal told Muslims about their great Past and urges Muslims to live like brotherhood and unity.
Bal-e-Jibreel (Gabriel's Wing):
Published in 1935, Bal-e-Jabreel is the book written in Urdu. Famous Urdu poem “Mosque of Spain” is from this book. Iqbal visited different countries around the world. During his visit to different countries, he wrote poems that also belong to this masterpiece.
Zarb-e-Kaleem (The Rod of Moses):
Published in 1936, this book was written by Iqbal after the success of two successive Urdu books i.e. Bal-e-Jibreel and Bang-e-Dara in 1935 and 1927 respectively. This book addresses the Muslims on their political issues. This is the third book on politics written by Sir Iqbal. This book was also published by another name “A declaration of war against Present Times”.
Asrar-e-Khudi (The Secrets of Selflessness):
Published in 1915, Allama Iqbal's first collection of Persian poetry, poems emphasize the spirit and self from a religious, spiritual perspective. This book consists of the number of poems that addresses the Muslims’ world specifically mention the concept of the ideal Muslim community, ethical values, and principals on how to live individually and socially. This book is also famous with the name of Asrar-e-Khudi.
Zabur-e Ajam (Persian Psalms):
Published in 1927, Zabur-e-Ajam is the book written in Persian. It has two major portions first comprises ghazals and the second has single long poems. In this Iqbal urges youth to be dynamic and energetic in the future remembering their beautiful past.
