The longest murder investigation seems to have ended. British scientists claim to have revealed the secret of the death of the young pharaoh Tutankhamun. Here is what the Independent newspaper writes about this.
Although the 19-year-old Tutankhamun did not have time to accomplish anything remarkable and is considered far from the most outstanding pharaoh, it was his person who attracted the attention of researchers for several reasons at once. Firstly, his tomb did not reach our time looted, which caused a natural interest in this figure from scientists.
Secondly, the father of Tutankhamun, apparently, was none other than Akhenaten - the ruler who wanted to put an end to the power of the priests, outlined and partly even carried out a number of fundamental reforms in ancient Egypt.
Thirdly, the son might have wanted to continue his father’s reforms, but this, they say, was opposed by the ruling elite, which killed the pharaoh. His mummy revealed numerous fractures and other signs of clearly violent death, including numerous burns.
All this caused numerous versions about the causes of death of a young man who died more than three and a quarter millennia ago, in 1323 BC. e. Ufologists, for example, even talked about the fact that Tutankhamun died as a result of the crash of a mysterious aircraft, which was piloted by a young pharaoh. Hence, they say, and fractures, and burns. The device, of course, was provided to the pharaoh for rent by aliens, with the help of which Tutankhamun wanted to establish new, more progressive orders in his state.
However, other, quite earthly reasons for his death were also called. In particular, at first it was believed that the 19-year-old ruler fell victim to a conspiracy. When the sarcophagus with the mummy was first opened in 1925, no fatal injuries were found and it was suggested that Tutankhamun was carefully strangled.
In the 60s of the twentieth century, specialists made mummies x-ray. And then it turned out that the skull on the back of the head was broken, pieces of bones were found inside it. It turned out that someone hit Tutankhamun in the head with a blunt object, sneaking up behind. It smelled of crime.
In 2002, British police officers Greg Cooper and Michael King began investigating the killing of the pharaoh. First, they identified the circle of the main suspects: the Mayor Treasurer, the commander Horemheb, the Prime Minister Ai and the wife of the pharaoh Ankhesenamon. As a result, detectives pointed to the prime minister as the most likely customer of the crime.
And for about three years around the world they were sure that the pharaoh was killed with a stick.
However, in 2005, a scan on a tomograph showed that a violation of the integrity of Tutankhamun's skull occurred after his death. But the bone of the left leg of the pharaoh damaged during his lifetime. This gave rise to a new version: they say, Tutankhamun broke his leg (open fracture), received blood poisoning. Which caused death.
And in 2010, DNA analysis showed: Pharaoh died of malaria. Although a broken leg also played a role - a fracture weakened the body, where the infection from malaria mosquitoes easily penetrated. Malaria DNA was discovered in the remains after more than three thousand years. The results of this study were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Zaha Hawass, who led the research, agreed with the version of death from malaria. In addition to her, scientists found at Tutankhamun a whole bunch of serious diseases. The young pharaoh suffered from brittle bones, a cleft palate, clubbed, dragged his left leg and walked with a wand.
