Most likely, the matter was as follows: US President Richard Nixon was scheduled to arrive in Moscow for these very May days, negotiations with which were very important to the Soviet government. Most likely, that is why it closed its eyes even to such a tragedy.
According to knowledgeable people, President Nixon, who did not want to go to the USSR, hoped that after the bombing of the Soviet ship, our government would cancel his visit to Moscow. But it did not seem to notice this tragedy. And Nixon had to come to the Soviet Union ...
Politics always remains politics, against which the fate of ordinary people is never taken into account. Unfortunately, few people know about the heroic actions of Soviet sailors who saved their ship even today.
Just a day before the tragedy, on May 9, 1972, the future ship's captain Nikolai Vasilyevich Pukhov met the Grisha Hakobyan ship in Vietnam, in the port of Kampa. Just on this day, the ship was put to the pier for coal loading in Japan. He arrived in Camphor from Haiphong, where he delivered flour.
Victory Day was held on the ship in an appropriate manner. And this was not prevented by the raids of American aviation, which were carried out three times that day, one fell on time at a solemn meeting. I had to interrupt him and go to the germoblock. When they returned from hiding in the wardroom, the solemn meeting devoted to the victory over fascist Germany turned into a rally of solidarity with the Vietnamese. "When will peace finally come to this land warped by long wars?" Everyone asked. They did not yet know that the victory of the Vietnamese over the aggressors was already close, a little more than 9 months remained before it.
The next day, the raids began right from dawn. Loading the ship was in full swing, although because of this it had to be interrupted. In the holds there were already 3185 tons of 4 thousand planned. The departure of Grisha Hakobyan for the flight was scheduled for 6 a.m. on May 11.
At 16.55 local time, the ship ended the working day. Who collected the instrument, who changed clothes, who took a shower before dinner. At this time, an air alert was announced - the third for the day. Who was what, rushed to the hermoblock, located on the port side. The vessel was moored on the port side to the pier (this is an important detail in this case). The ship got used to clearly follow the alarm requirements, for this there was a strict demand. Moreover, a message came to Camphu that on May 9, planes returning after the bombing of Haiphong fired at the Pevek tanker, which is on an external roadstead. The ship was damaged, several people were seriously injured.
