In the second half of the 19th century, several large deposits of diamonds were discovered in South Africa, rubies in Burma, sapphires in Sri Lanka. And only North America could not boast of a rich deposit of precious stones. And suddenly ... However, first things first.
On a February 1871 morning, prospectors Philippe Arnold and his cousin John Slack arrived in San Francisco by train. They immediately went to the Bank of California, where they asked for a canvas bag full of rough rubies, emeralds, and diamonds. Catching the surprised look of a bank clerk, Arnold said: "We were just so damn lucky. They searched for gold, but found pebbles. " Unusual customers were immediately reported to the president of the bank, William Ralston, the largest financier of San Francisco. He made his fortune on bold investments and risky transactions.
This is one version of the development of events. Arnold himself said that they gave the precious stones to local businessman George Roberts, and they took the word from him to keep a secret. Although the prospectors were well aware that Roberts did not know how to keep his mouth shut. One of the first to find out about the precious find, William Ralston, immediately ordered to find the miners. Arnold and Slack did not immediately agree to the meeting. The powerful banker inspired them with awe.
Ralston led the prospectors to a detailed map of America and asked them to show where they found diamonds. Arnold and Slack hesitated, supposedly poorly versed in geography, although they remembered the road to diamonds well. In what state did they make their discovery? Perhaps this is Arizona, or Colorado, or Wyoming. It’s about a thousand miles from the "Field of Miracles"
The miners said they were not going to give up the development of the field to anyone, but the companion, especially with the money, would not hurt them. Of course, Ralston wanted to become this companion. Slack and Arnold took time to think. A few days later they returned and told the banker that they were accepting his offer. To begin with, they are ready to show the field to the two envoys of Ralston. The only condition is that the inspectors must complete the final part of the journey with a blindfold.
A few days later, the emissaries of Ralston returned home, their faces shone with delight: they had never seen so many precious stones before. Diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies are scattered everywhere ... "There are millions of dollars in them!" They said excitedly.
Ralston sent an urgent message to London, where his old friend Asbury Harpending was engaged in stock speculation. He had experience in mining and it was difficult to find a better partner. After receiving a telegram, Harpending raised his eyebrows in surprise: diamonds in the western United States? Has Ralston gone mad? He shared his thoughts with Baron Rothschild. "You should not be so categorical," said the wise baron. - America is a great country. She has already presented the world with many surprises. Why not be diamonds in her land? If that turns out to be true, let me know. " In May 1871, Harpending decided to return to San Francisco.
In the meantime, Ralston found out that Philip Arnold and John Slack were seasoned gold miners. Arnold was born in Elizabethtown in 1829 (Kentucky). He participated in the war with Mexico. The Gold Rush brought twenty-year-old Philip to California. The prospector did not return home empty-handed; he bought a farm and started a family.
