The Ottoman Empire reached the peak of its military power and glory during the reign of Suleiman I the Magnificent (1520-1566). Following the conquest of Egypt, the Turkish fleet captured Rhodes in 1522, which allowed the Ottoman authorities to assert their rule in the eastern Mediterranean. Having launched the struggle against the Crusades of the Spaniards and the Portuguese in North Africa and using the activity of the Maghreb corsairs led by the Barbarossa brothers, the Ottoman sultans managed to extend their power to the entire African coast of the Mediterranean Sea up to Morocco.
However, in Europe, the interests of Suleiman intersected with the interests of the Habsburg empire, which led to fierce battles. The capture of Belgrade and the defeat of the Hungarian-Czech army near Mohacs in 1526 opened the way for the Turks to conquer Hungary. In that battle, the Hungarian king Lajos II died, and Hungary, as a nation-state, ceased to exist. On a vacant throne, Suleiman seated the puppet government of Jan Zapolye, but the emperor’s brother Ferdinand, who had many supporters, began to claim the throne. Suleiman, for a while distracted by Persian affairs, told Ferdinand that he would "come to Vienna for him." And indeed, the Ottomans sent the next blow to Austria.
Despite the torrential rains that became the meteorological phenomenon of the century in the fall of 1529, Suleiman considered it less than his dignity to postpone the campaign to Vienna. Ahead of his troops was a detachment of 20,000 horsemen, whom the Turks called "akini" - sackers. Their task was to plunder the country and destroy the inhabitants in order to prepare the Turkish occupation. It was these "Akinges" who killed 5,000 civilians in Traismauer. Historians believe that they killed two-thirds of the population of the areas through which they went - and this is hardly a big exaggeration.
In September 1529, the Turkish army, supported by detachments of the Zapolye, took Buda and restored the sultanic protege on the Hungarian throne. Then the 120 thousandth army moved to Vienna.
Janissary infantry and light artillery moved up the Danube in longboats. A man will pass everywhere, but one force was not able to move through these rains in a country where woodland prevailed and there were no paved roads. The severity turned out to be unbearable even for the Danube flotilla, and Suleiman had to leave the most important siege weapons - 200 cannons.
On this occasion, the sultan did not grieve much - although, as subsequent events show, the absence of guns will greatly complicate the siege to the Turks. The sultan was confident in the skill of Turkish engineers. In addition, Zapolye joined him in Mojac with several detachments of trustworthy Hungarians. Suleiman planned to use another means, mines, if Vienna, in which there were only 20,000 defenders, did not give up immediately. With the Turkish hordes came several thousand miners from Wallachia and Moldova.
On September 26, the Turks set up seven large camps in the vicinity of Vienna. Suleiman first ordered the construction of fortification parallels from the south-west side and mining at the Kerntner Gate on the south side to the accompaniment of artillery bombardment and a continuous downpour of arrows.
The shooting was so intense that being in the streets near the wall was unsafe. Many arrows were decorated with expensive fabrics and even inlaid with pearls, which accurately characterized Suleiman the Magnificent, whose archers were located on suburban ruins. The remaining guns in the army failed to achieve noticeable results.
On the second day, Turkish gunners began to aim at higher buildings, especially the St. Stephen’s Tower, where the city’s defense leader, Count Nikolaus zu Zalm, set up an observation post. It is noteworthy that the Turks never once hit the tower.
