Novena to the Blood of Christ
The novena (from Latin novem, 'nine') is an exercise of devotion that is practiced for nine days to obtain some grace or to ask for a certain intention. It may be dedicated to Christ himself in some invocation, or to a canonized saint whose intercession is more powerful before God, due to the merits achieved during his life. For example the Virgin Mary and the saints. They can be nine consecutive days or nine times a given day of the week (nine Fridays, for example).
When the intercession of a saint is requested, it seeks to imitate its virtues and holiness since otherwise the ninth would be meaningless if not practiced with faith and determination to change. Unlike the octaves, festive, the novenas are made with an intention or to pray for a deceased.
Currently, and especially in Spain, Latin America and the Philippines, many towns prepare the festivities with a solemn novena in honor of the Patron or Patron of the municipality, and basically consist in the celebration of a Mass in a solemn way and with great attendance of faithful during Nine consecutive days. Although also, in many places, the nine days have been reduced to three, denominating triduum instead of novenario. The celebration of "the ninth of the Immaculate" is very common in Spain to prepare the feast of December 8, in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
Specifically in Colombia it is celebrated from December 16 where families gather in front of the manger to pray the Novena de Aguinaldos.1 It is believed that the driver of this custom, according to official sources, was Fray Fernando de Jesús Larrea, a Franciscan Quito, who at the end of the 18th century sent her to Mrs. Clemencia Gertrudis de Jesús Caycedo Vélez Ladrón de Guevara de Aróstegui and Escoto, founder of the La Enseñanza College in Bogotá.
The novenas agree with the Bible that it is known that there are 40 days between the Resurrection and the Ascension; and there are nine days between Ascension and Pentecost; time in which the apostles and other Christians gathered remained in prayer, although they are only connections created by theologians could be more than just a coincidence, or not, and be just that; 3 they are also inspired by certain customs of Greek culture and Roman, who celebrated nine days of mourning for the dead or to appease the gods. Jesus Christ taught to pray with insistence (Luke 18,11) and asked the Apostles to prepare themselves in prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, after their Ascension to Heaven (Acts 2, 1-41). From this ecclesial experience arises the novena of Pentecost. Although the early Christians followed the custom in terms of the number of days, the content of the novenas was completely new they consisted of fervent Christian prayers performed, in principle in community form. Pope Alexander VII grants the first indulgence to a novena, in honor of St. Francis Xavier.
St. Augustine warned Christians not to fall into pagan customs during the novenas. St. Jerome said that the number nine indicates suffering and pain in the Bible.
In the Middle Ages it was said that Jesus Christ died on the ninth hour and that, thanks to Holy Mass, the deceased would be elevated to heaven on the ninth day. Also at this time appear the novenas of preparation, inspired by the nine months of pregnancy of the Virgin, which are celebrated during the nine days before an important holiday, for example, Christmas.
