Walisongo or Walisanga was known as the spreader of Islam in Java in the 14th century. They lived in three important areas of the north coast of Java Island, namely Surabaya-Gresik-Lamongan-Tuban in East Java, Demak-Kudus-Muria in Central Java, and Cirebon. in West java.

The Walisongo era was the end of Hindu-Buddhist domination in Nusantara culture to be replaced by Islamic culture. They are a symbol of the spread of Islam in Indonesia, especially in Java. Of course many other figures also played a role. However, their very large role in establishing the Islamic Kingdom in Java, as well as their influence on the culture of the community at large and direct preaching, made the Walisongo more widely mentioned than others.

Meaning of Walisongo

There are several opinions regarding the meaning of Walisongo. The first is the nine wali, which indicates the number of saints who are semb

ilan, or sanga in Javanese. Another opinion states that the word songo / sanga comes from the word tsana which in Arabic means noble. Another opinion states that the word ada comes from Javanese, which means place.

Another opinion says that Walisongo is a dakwah assembly that was first established by Sunan Gresik (Maulana Malik Ibrahim) in 1404 AD (808 Hijriah). [1] The Walisongo were social reformers of their time. Their influence was felt in various forms of manifestations of the new civilization of Javanese society, from health, farming, commerce, culture, arts, society, to government.
