Javanese (Javanese, Hanacaraka: ꦧꦱꦗꦮ, Pegon: باسا جاوا) is an Austronesian language which is mainly spoken by Javanese ethnic groups in the central and eastern parts of the island of Java. Javanese is also spoken by the Javanese diaspora in other regions of Indonesia, such as in Sumatra and Kalimantan; and outside Indonesia such as in Suriname, the Netherlands and Malaysia. Using the lexicostatistic method, in 1965 the linguist Isidore Dyen classified Javanese into a group he called "Javo-Sumatra Hesion", which also included Sundanese and "Melayik" languages. This group is also called "Malay-Javanese" by the linguist Berndt Nothofer who first tried to reconstruct the ancestors of the languages ​​in this hypothetical group with data which were then limited to only four languages ​​(Javanese, Sundanese, Madurese, and Malay) .

The Malay-Javanese grouping has been criticized and rejected by various linguists. Austronesian historical linguist K. Alexander Adelaar does not include Javanese in the Malay-Sumbawa subgroup (which includes Melayik, Sundanese and Madurese languages) which he proposed in 2005. Another Austronesian linguist, Robert Blust, also did not include languages. Java in the Greater North Borneo subgroup which he proposed as an alternative to the Malay-Sumbawa hypothesis in 2010.
