These Legends- Rabindranath Tagore, Munshi Premchand, and Saadat Hasan Manto had different writing styles but the commonality among their writings is that they talked about societal evils. Their opinions were the mirror of the society; told exactly what is happening. They never shied away in bringing out the societal wrong happenings. Their unique perspective of looking at the minute-to-minute thing brought life to their characters and situation in the stories.
Saadat Hassan Manto
He was a writer, playwright, and author who was born in Ludhiana, India. He mainly wrote in Urdu, kin to Hindi. In his name, he had 22 collections of short stories, a novel, five series of radio plays, two collections of personal sketches, and three collections of essays. Manto’s writings were bold and strong. He fearlessly wrote about the hard truths of the society that no one even dared to speak. Manto had witnesses and chronicled the chaos that prevailed during the time of partition of undivided India. Manto’s first-ever story was titled ‘Tamasha’ which was based on the Jallianwala Bagh massacre but translating the works of Victor Hugo, Oscar Wilde and Russian writers like Chekhov and Gorky initiated his Literary journey. Manto kept on writing and brought out the macabre animalistic nature of the enraged people with his scathing insights into human behavior.
Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore also known by his sobriquets Gurudev, Kabiguru, and Biswakabi was born in Kolkata. He was a Bengali poet, short-story writer, playwright, music who introduced colloquialism in Bengali Literature. His writings had the touch of deeply rooted Indian traditions and western learning traditions. His writings include the deft portrayals of common people's lives, philosophy, and social issues.
Munshi Premchand
Munshi Premchand was the pen name of Dhanpant Rai Shrivastava. He was a famous Hindi literature writer known for his literary works- Godan, Karambhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar, and Idgah. He began his literary journey with the pen name “Nawab Rai” but eventually switched to “Munshi”. He has been referred to as the “Upanyas Samrat” as he wrote more than a dozen of Hindi Upanyas (Hindi Novels), around 300 short stories, and several essays. He depicted the problems of the poor and the upper-middle class. His writings gave a voice to the social issues. He wrote on how the power holders in the society exploit the weak.
