Mahalakshmi Temple, Kolhapur is the temple of Mahalakshmi (Ambabai), a resident of Karveer. This temple is one of the three and a half peethas of temples in Maharashtra. It is one of the 108 Peethas mentioned in the Puranas, and one of the three and a half Peethas of the Goddess in Maharashtra. From the layout of the temple, it dates back to the Chalukya period. It is likely to have been built between 600 and 700. The temple was first built by the Rashtrakuta or earlier Shilahar kings around the eighth century.
The antiquity of the Ambabai temple is proved by the Puranas, many Jain texts, copperplates and many documents found and Ambabai of Kolhapur is literally the Kulaswamini of the whole of Maharashtra.
It is said that when the Mughals destroyed this temple, the idol of the goddess was hidden by the priest for many years. Later in the reign of Sambhaji Maharaj. The temple was revived between 1715 and 1722. The difference in craftsmanship is due to the fine carved walls and the simple peaks.
According to many, the goddess is a form of Jagdamba because of the lion near the idol and the matulinga on the vein. The idol of the goddess is made of stone and weighs 40 kg. Behind the idol is a stone lion. There is a crown on the head and a serpent on it. In the 11th century inscription, the goddess is mentioned as 'Lingashaishaghausharini'. The Sanskrit Aarti of the Goddess also describes the serpent on her head. In the seventh verse of the 13th chapter of the Karveer Mahatmya, it is said that the Pannagankita Mastakam means that the serpent saw his fana on the head of the Goddess. In the Hemadri Veerachit Chaturvargachintamani, composed by Hemadri, the pioneer of the Hemadpanthi temple system, it is mentioned that the idol on the head is a serpent named Karveer Niwasini. This temple of Mahalakshmi in Kolhapur is facing west and Mahavdar is facing west. The traditional Maratha style, with wooden pillars and ispidar arches, can be seen at the entrance. The temple has grown many times over the last ten centuries. The temple has four main parts. The Gabhara and Rangmandap in the eastern part is the oldest part. The temple of the Goddess is here. To the north is the mahakara of Mahakali and to the south is the mahabara of Mahasaraswati.
According to Hindu Dharmashastra, along with the prestige of the idol, the temple is also deified and therefore it is permissible to repair or increase the temple, but it is not permissible to remove or demolish any part. This seems to have led to a large increase in the number of old temples. At the time of Chaitra Pournima, the view of the three peaks rising one after the other and being illuminated by lamps is indescribable.
On the walls of the temple are carved dancers, women playing instruments, mridangs, talakari, harpists, mirror viewers, yakshas, nymphs, warriors and kinnars. On Magh Shuddha Panchami, the temple's architectural features were the excellent directing instruments that would fall on the face of the goddess along with the rays of the sunset, the unpaved stone construction, and the foundation of many angles on the constellation. There are temples of many deities like Sheshashai, Dattatreya, Vishnu, Ganapati etc. and Kashi and Mankarnika Kundas in the temple type.
As Mahalakshmi is an awakened temple and a goddess who takes vows, there is always a flow of people to pay their vows. Gopikabai, the wife of Balaji Bajirao Peshwa, is said to have carried four gold bracelets weighing twenty-four tolas (approximately five kilos) to pay her vows.
Friday, Tuesday are considered the days of the Goddess. Every Friday and on all four Purnimas of Ashwin, Kartik, Margashirsha and Magh and Chaitra Vadya Pratipades, a palanquin procession of the brass idol of Goddess is taken out. Along with the palanquin, the goddess has a bhaldar-chopdar and a palanquin bhoi. In the past, elephants, horses, etc. were all entourage for the palanquin. Heroines used to sing and dance at all stages of the palanquin.
On Navratra, vehicle worship of Goddess is done for nine days. Kalash, flower garland, grains sown in black soil etc. are used in home worship. Ashtami was the city tour of the Goddess. It is customary to ask for the protection of the Goddess on Tuesdays and Fridays for Navsa. It is customary to fast Mahalakshmi in the month of Ashwin. The goddess is to be carried with turmeric and placed on a copper or earthen pot with firewood and raised and blown in front of the goddess.
