The Constitution of the Czech Republic is the basic law of the Czech Republic. It was adopted as a constitutional law by the Czech National Council on 16 December 1992 and published in the Czech Collection of Laws under No. 1/1993 Coll.

On the basis of the Constitutional Act on the Czechoslovak Federation of 1968, not only was the Czech Socialist Republic established on 1 January 1969, but the adoption of republican constitutions was also envisaged, but they were not adopted until 1989. After 1989, preparatory work began, but uncertainties about the future of the federation caused work in the Czech Republic to stagnate. Eventually, the first Czech constitution began to be prepared only in a time crunch, which was related to the impending demise of Czechoslovakia.
The Czech Constitution consists of a preamble and 8 chapters, including basic provisions, legislative power, executive power, judicial power, the Supreme Audit Office, the Czech National Bank, territorial self-government and transitional and final provisions. The Constitution of the Czech Republic therefore implements the separation of individual powers and a certain system of brakes and counterweights. By June 2013, the Constitution had been amended eight times. 22 articles were affected by the changes, nine articles were added, two articles were inserted and one article was repealed in the Constitution.

The Constitution builds on the Czech Republic existing within the defunct federation and provides for transitional measures for the competence of constitutional bodies. It expressly repealed the Constitution of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic, the Constitutional Act on the Czechoslovak Federation, the constitutional laws that amended and supplemented them, and the Constitutional Act of the Czech National Council No. 67/1990 Coll., On the State Symbols of the Czech Republic. On the contrary, it lists which existing Czechoslovak and Czech constitutional laws continue to apply in the Czech Republic as constitutional laws (those governing state borders and those adopted by the Czech National Council after June 1992), which are together with the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. part of the so-called constitutional order. It then granted the force of (ordinary) law to other constitutional laws still in force in the Czech Republic.
