Sherali Jo`rayev 1947-yil Asakada tug`ilgan. Uning qaysi kunda tug`ilgani noma`lum. Qo`shiqchi 12-aprelni ramziy ravishda o`z tug`ilgan kuni qilib tanlagan. 12-aprelda rus kosmonavti Yuriy Gagarin fazoga uchgan. Qo`shiqchiga ko`ra, uning bu sanani o`z tug`ilgan kuni o`laroq tanlashiga yana bir sabab u o`quvchilik davrida 12-aprel kuni bo`lib o`tgan velopoygada g`olib bo`lgan.
Jo`rayev 1972-yil Toshkent teatr va rassomlik san`ati institutini tugatgan. 1976-yil Mannon Uyg`ur nomidagi Toshkent davlat san`at institutini yakunlagan. Jo`rayevning ikki o`g`li – Shohjahon Jo`rayev va Zoirshoh (Zirg`omshoh) Jo`rayev ham qo`shiqchilik yo`lini tanlagan. Shogirdlari: Halim Jo`rayev, Ilhom Jo`rayev, Shuhrat Davlatov, Rustam Gaipov, Botir Qodirov, Asilbek Amonulloh (Negmatov), Sardor Mamadaliyev va boshqalar.
Jo`rayev o`zbek davlat estradasi (1972-1973), „Shodlik“ ashula va raqs ansambli (1972-1979), Andijon viloyati filarmoniyasi (1979-1986), O`zbek davlat filarmoniyasi (1986-1996), „O`zbeknavo“ birlashmasi (1999-yildan)da yakkaxon xonanda bo`lgan.
Jo`rayev tabiatan shirali ovozga ega. Ijro uslubi monologik, dramatik iztiroblarga asoslangan. Uning ijrosidagi qo`shiqlar xalqchilligi, mushohadali, falsafiy mazmunga boyligi, benazir jozibasi va teran insoniy dardliligi bilan ajralib turadi. Jo`rayev repertuari ko`p qirrali va rang-barang. Qo`shiqlari asosini Sharq mumtoz (Alisher Navoiy, Zahiriddin Muhammad Bobur, Sa`diy Sheroziy, Hofiz, Mashrab, Ogahiy, Jaloliddin Rumiy, Jome` va boshqalar) va zamonaviy (Erkin Vohidov, Abdulla Oripov va boshqalar) shoirlarning she`rlari tashkil etadi. 2008-yil Jo`rayev uyida Rumiyxonlik kechalarini uyushtirgan.
Sherali Jo`rayev o`zining uzoq yillik ijodi davomida yuzlab qo`shiq yozib, ijro etgan. Uning eng mashhur ashulalari orasida „Bahor ayyomi“ (Bobur she`ri), „Birinchi muhabbatim“ (Abdulla Oripov she`ri), „Inson qasidasi“ (Erkin Vohidov she`ri), „Karvon“, „Meni kutgil“ (Konstantin Simonov she`ri), „Oshiqlar sardori“ (Rasul Hamzatov she`ri), „O`zbegim“ (Erkin Vohidov she`ri), „O`xshamas“ (Alisher Navoiy g`azali) qo`shiqlari bor.
Jo`rayevning „O`zbegim“ qo`shig`i World Music Network 2005-yil chiqargan „O`rta Osiyo musiqasi bo`yicha umumiy qo`llanma“ (ingl. Rough Guide to the Music of Central Asia) albomiga kiritilgan. 2004-yil 23-aprelda Britaniya qirolichasi Yelizaveta IIning 78 yoshga to`lish munosabati bilan Britaniya elchisi Craig Murray mingdan oshiq mehmonni elchixonaga chaqirgan. Toshkentdagi tadbirga Sherali Jo‘rayev, Sevara Nazarxon va Vladimir Neimer dirijorlik qilgan orkestr chaqirilgan. O`sha paytda yana Britaniyaning O`zbekistondagi elchixonasi Shotlandiyalik Battlefield guruhining O`zbekiston bo`ylab turini uyushtirgan. Bu guruh bilan Jo`rayev ham birga qo`shiq kuylagan.
Jo`rayev aksar qo`shiqlari kuyini o`zi bastalagan (jumladan, „Birinchi muhabbatim“, „O`zbegim“, „Karvon“, „Achchiq haqiqat“, „Yaralgan“, „Oshiqlar sardori“, „Inson qasidasi“, „Oshiq bo`ling“ va boshqalar). Ba`zi qo`shiqlarining matnini ham o`zi yozgan. Bular orasida „Bobo Dehqon“, „Zamon“, „Qarashlarga“, „Ona Turkiston“, „Sohibqiron“, „Do`st bo`lsang, yonimda tur“, „Qayon ketmoqdasiz?“ ashulalari bor.
1992-yilda O`zteleradiokompaniyasi Jo`rayev ijodiga bag`ishlangan „Bir ulug` el bor jahonda“ film-esse yaratgan. Qo`shiqchi Yevropa, Osiyo mamlakatlarida gastrolda bo`lgan.
Jo‘rayev 1990-yildan 1995-yilgacha O`zbekiston Respublikasi Oliy Kengashi a`zosi bo`lgan. U „Sherali va Oybarchin“ filmiga ssenariy yozgan va filmda bosh rolni o`ynagan. 1998-yil „Bola yerning sultoni“ deb nomlanuvchi kitob yozgan.
