EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In a caravan, an alchemist recounted a story he read along the way. It is a variation of the narcissus legend. The main character in the series is Santiago, a young man raised in a poor family. His parents worked hard all their lives so that he could go to a seminary. But Santiago has a burning desire to travel the world, and his father agrees to let him use his fortune to buy a flock of sheep.
As a shepherd, he has traveled throughout the countryside of Andaluisa, southern Spain, for several years enjoying a carefree and adventurous life. The story begins as Santiago prepares to return to a small city where a year ago, he met a beautiful girl, the son of a businessman. Although he only talked to her for a while, his feelings for her made him think about the life of a shepherd like him, and consider a more stable life.
When he arrived in that city, he first decided to go to the place where the gypsies tell to decode a recurring dream he had had for a long time. He always dreamed that there was a child playing with his sheep, then took his hand leading to the base of the pyramid in Egypt to show him where there is a secret treasure. But Santiago always woke up just before the child showed exactly where he was hiding. The gypsy fortune teller said that he had to go find that treasure, because if it was said by a child, it was real.
At first he did not believe the gypsy, but then appeared an old man, calling himself Melchizedeck, king of Salem, advising him that it was his own "Legend of the Person" (Purpose of Life). Melchizedeck told him a wonderful story about a happiness-seeker. Santiago decided to go to Africa. You sell the sheep and go to Tangier. But in Tangier, he was robbed. Losing hope, he decided to walk, to a hill, he found a crystal shop. Business was no longer thriving because a new city had just sprung up. He joined the caravan to a desert where near the pyramids. In the convoy, he met an Englishman who had been searching for true alchemists for 20 years. This British man had a ton of books on the alchemy that surprised him. You learn a lot along the way.
The group of people gradually moved towards the oasis. When a certain English tried to observe the desert and learn the desert language, Santiago read his books and learned about alchemy. The British told him that the purpose of the alchemists was to refine the metal by smelting for many years.
