The canary (Serinus canaria), also known as canary-the-kingdom or, popularly, canary is a small warbler, Finch family member. This bird is native of the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Its name comes from the latter, and the name of the islands comes from the word canaria Latin meaning "dogs" since the Romans found there many wild dogs. The canary-the-realm name was given in opposition to the canary-the-earth, for the canaries were taken by pirates and navigators as gifts to European kings.
