The free museum app of the German Oil Museum Wietze (Ldkr. Celle, Lower Saxony) offers three GPS-controlled discovery tours to the cultural landscape relics of the Wietz oil industry. Find out more about the most important large-scale exhibits on the extensive outdoor area, explore the locations of the former production and transport facilities, and discover buildings from the time of the oil boom around 1900.
Wietze was the "cradle of the German oil industry", where one of the first wells for oil worldwide was sunk as early as 1858/59. The extraction of heavy oil from above-ground “tar hollows” has been attested since 1652, and it was used as a car grease and even as a remedy. From 1899 the industrial development of the oil field took place, initially through drilling (a total of approx. 2000 pieces), from 1920 also by mining through an "oil shaft" with a length of 95 kilometers at the end! The move of hundreds of oil workers "from all over the world" to the once tranquil little heath village changed the social and infrastructure lastingly.
The user-friendly app offers a variety of historical facts, some of them new, as well as numerous photos from the archive of the German Petroleum Museum. It is an excellent addition to the museum's permanent exhibition and can of course also be used as a source of information independently of a museum visit.
