Is the story behind the clearing of the Wonosari forest on the orders of Raden Tumenggung Prawirosetiko, the 2nd Regent of Gunungkidul. On March 26 and 31, 1831 the Government of the Dutch East Indies and the Sultan of Yogyakarta entered into a cooperation contract on the division of new administrative territories in the Sultanate accompanied by the appointment of the position of head of the region. At that time the Yogyakarta Sultanate was divided into three districts namely Bantulkarang for the southern region, Denggung for the northern region and Kalasan for the eastern region. Gunungkidul under the administration of the eastern region, based in Kalasan. Following up on the division of the new Yogyakarta Sultanate, the Gunungkidul Regency was officially established with Wonosari as the center of government.
Sultan Hamengku Buwono V in Yogyakarta then appointed Raden Tumenggung Prawirosetiko as Duke of Gunungkidul, replacing KRT Poncodirjo, as well as asking to regulate the Gunungkidul region, specifically moving the district to a location closer to Yogyakarta, but also close to all subjects in Gunungkidul. So Alas Nongko Doyong was chosen, which has a flat area, a lot of water sources, fertile land and is in a strategic location.
To carry out the order, Raden Tumenggung Prawirosetiko invited all banners, demang, rangga, and district secretary to hold a deliberation. One of them is Panji Harjodipuro from Semanu. Then Raden Tumenggung Prawirosetiko ordered the banner to carry out this noble task with his trusted subordinates, a Demang from Piyaman named Ki Demang Wonopawiro who was young, brave, brave and still single. The process of clearing the forest was carried out successfully and construction of pendapa, wards and buildings for the civil servants was immediately carried out. After finishing, the Gunungkidul Duchy moved to Alas Nongko Doyong which was later renamed Wonosari by Raden Tumenggung Prawirosetiko.

As the executive of the government, Panji Harjodipuro called Demang Wonopawiro in Piyaman to appear. Demang Wonopawiro saw Roro Sudarmi and fell in love.
Mbok Nitisari is a shaman, a smart person, who is powerful. Demang Wonopawiro returned to Piyaman to ask Mbok Nitisari for his consideration of the task ordered by Panji Harjodipuro to open the Nongko Doyong Forest which is famous for its haunted stubbornness. Mbok Nitisari agreed and was willing to help with the heavy task. Mbok Nitisari ordered Demang Wonopawiro to make offerings. Demang Wonopawiro and Mbok Nitisari went to Alas Nongko Doyong which is famous for jalma mara jalma die, haunted because it was controlled by Nyi Gadung Mlati, demit Alas ruler Nongko Doyong. Mbok Nitisari asked Nyi Gadung Mlati to open Alas Nongko Doyong. Nyai Gadung Mlati does not allow. There was a battle between Demit Nyi Gadung Mlati and Mbok Nitisari. Nyi Gadung Mlati lost. Nyi Gadung Mlati allows clearing of the forest on condition that they are offered an annual offering and Nyi Gadung Mlati is left to live as a guard.
Forest clearing is done. Demang Wonopawiro mobilized the people of Piyaman to help clear the forest. Nyi Gadung Mlati helps spiritually. Seeing the success of Demang Wonopawiro, Ronggo Puspowilogo, a demang from Seneng, Siraman area, became jealous because he hoped that at first he was given the task by Panji Harjodipuro to clear the forest. The capital is starting to be built. The market was established in the Seneng area.
