History of the Issuer

In the framework of the 2nd Socio-environmental Meeting in San Bernardo on June 25, 2016, Radio Trapananda began its transmissions, a traveling digital station that currently only supplies power to the sun.
The initiative was developed by the Movement for the Defense of Patagonia that was born in 2011 in Santiago with young people from the extreme south of the country and who met to respond to the facilities of mega hydroelectric projects in the Aysén Region.
Under this curious and autonomous spirit, the organization decides to expand the range of action incorporated by radial spaces as a space for transformation. The idea of running on renewable energy comes after the unexpected sale of Radio Canelo de San Bernardo in July 2014. This AM station hosted for 3 seasons the group's first radio program called "Breaking Inertia". That was the forced foot to start their own project in online format, which has allowed them to transmit from anywhere there is an Internet connection, achieving great coverage at a very low cost. Throughout this route, the technical support of Juan Ortega Castillo, an older adult and a radio broadcaster with a long history on national radio, was vital.

Remembering the free spirit of their native land, they decided to name this radio as “trapanada”. Trapananda means “born soon” in archaic Spanish. It is the name that once had the area of Chilean (or western) Patagonia today known as Aysén. It has always been a distant and inhospitable region for explorers and settlers who ventured into its lands covered in thick jungle and strong winds. Only in 1927, President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo created the Aysén Territory, which 10 years later would become one more region of Chile.

The second stage of starting up the radial project based on the energy of the sun contemplated the installation of a non-conventional Renewable Energy system to power the station's equipment. The initiative is called the BEA Project as an acronym for the concept "Self-sustaining External Battery". BEA is an innovative and compact design, allowing it to transport energy. The system is made up of 3 parts: a tripod plus a mono crystalline solar panel, a reconditioned briefcase where the instruments (inverter, charge regulator and electronic circuits) are housed and a battery.

This system has an average expected performance of 14 hours without having to depend on the traditional power grid. With this, the group is demonstrating that the use of solar panels is a safe, clean and effective way to harness the practically unlimited energy of the sun for different purposes. This, under the conviction that helping to protect the planet is a shared responsibility and using solar energy is a concrete way to diversify Chile's polluted energy matrix - which is based on electricity generation produced by burning fossil fuels and Mega Hydroelectric Power Plants-.
With this method of power generation, it is demonstrated that the payment electricity supply is not necessary, but rather that the paradigm shift is to have to seek and share the knowledge of how to implement autonomous systems and give it the use that is deemed necessary. The change is not in the how, if not in the what, for what and hand in hand with whom.
You can find the station by visiting: www.radiotrapananda.cl. Similarly, the group is available to give advice to other organizations that wish to implement this initiative. Interested parties contact: trapanandaradio@gmail.com
