History [edit | edit wiki text]
Initially, and for a long time, the term was applied only to the text, referred to in common parlance as Russian Akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Great akathist who gave formal scheme of all the later Akathist written in imitation of him.

Attributed to various authors, including Roman the Melodist, which, however, has no reliable confirmation.

Appeared most likely to VI (according to some assumptions, between the 3rd and 4th Ecumenical Councils); certainly not later than 626 years, when for him again was composed intonation Thee the Champion Leader - the so-called armhole (Gr. προοίμιον; 1st Kontakion in the Russian tradition), or Kukula (Gr. κουκούλιον - hood).

Armhole Akathist is not related to the content of the rest of the Akathist and has a different metric structure; it certainly is a later addition to the text. Its appearance is usually associated with the siege of Constantinople in the summer of 626, the Avars and Slavs; represents the winning song of thanksgiving, converted to the Virgin Mary on behalf of "Her hail", ie Constantinople, getting rid of the "evil". In today's (at least, from the XV century) Church Slavonic translation of the word "hail thy" are replaced by "Rabbi Toi."

Akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Slavic manuscripts and early printed tradition can be placed in different types of liturgical books: the Lenten Triodion (the vast majority of cases), the Psalms follow Horologion, kondakar, Akafistnike (XV century), Bogorodichnike (from the beginning of the XIV century). Originally akathist the Blessed Virgin Slavs met, obviously, as a part of the Lenten Triodion, a translation of which, by indirect evidence of the life of St. Clement of Ohrid, written by Theophylact, Archbishop of Ohrid (Bulgarian), was completed not later than 916 years.

The appearance of the later hymns [edit | edit wiki text]
The appearance of hymns, built on a formal model of the Akathist of the Blessed Virgin, took place only at the end of the Byzantine era.

Senior list Akathist to Jesus the Sweetest dates back XIII century; Slavic translation implemented in the XIV century, the author of the hymn is unknown. Attribution monk Theoktistos Studite (IX century) - the author of the canon with the Akathist - or Metropolitan Evhaitskomu John Mavropodu (XI century) is questionable. There is a hypothesis that the creation of the Akathist to Jesus the Sweetest due to the Athonite monasticism end of XIII - beginning of XIV century, the practice of Hesychasm and the writings of the Venerable Nicephorus Athos (Hesychast) and Gregory of Sinai. Is confirmed by the ancient manuscripts of the Greek script and Slavonic translation of the Akathist found in the libraries of the monasteries of Mount Athos.

Further development of the genre akathist associated with the names of the Patriarchs of Constantinople Patriarch Isidore I of Constantinople (1341-1349) and Filofeja Kokkina (1353-1354, 1364-1376). On the basis of known Slavic seven hymns Patriarch Isidore, entitled as "ICOS, like Akathist, creation Svyateyshago Novy Patriarch of Rome, Constantine hail Cyrus Isidore." This akathists

Hymn to the Virgin Mary the Mother of God

In addition to the Church Slavonic hymns, there are also several hundred hymns in other languages: Greek, Romanian, Serbian, English, French, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Polish, Georgian, Russian, Czech, Slovak. The total number of original hymns in different languages, according to Fr. Maxim Plyakin exceeded 1,700.
