Space Exploration Technologies Corp., whose trade name is SpaceX, is an American company for aerospace systems and space transport services based in Hawthorne, California. It was founded in 2002 by businessman Elon Musk with the aim of reducing space transport costs and allowing the colonization of Mars. SpaceX has since developed the Falcon launch vehicle family and the Dragon spacecraft family, which currently deliver payloads in Earth's orbit.

SpaceX's achievements include the first privately funded liquid fuel rocket to reach Earth orbit (Falcon 1 in 2008), the first privately funded company to launch, orbit and recover a spaceship (Dragon in 2010); the first private company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station (EEI) (Dragon in 2012); the first propulsive landing of an orbital rocket (Falcon 9 in 2015); and the first reuse of an orbital rocket (Falcon 9 in 2017). In March 2017, SpaceX had already transported ten missions to EEI under a space cargo refueling contract. NASA also awarded SpaceX a new development contract in 2011 to demonstrate a Dragon that would be used to transport astronauts to the ISS and safely return them to Earth.

SpaceX announced in 2011 that it was beginning a program to develop reusable rocket launch technology with private funds. In December 2015, the company's first stage of a rocket landed back on a landing pad near the launch site, where it successfully performed a vertical landing. This was the first time that a rocket did anything like this after an orbital flight. In April 2016, with the launch of the CRS-8, SpaceX successfully successfully vertically landed a first stage on a floating landing platform. May 2016, SpaceX again managed to land a first stage, but during a significantly more energetic geostationary transfer orbit mission. In March 2017, SpaceX became the first to successfully relaunch and land the first stage of a rocket orbital.

In September 2016, CEO Elon Musk unveiled the mission architecture of the Interplanetary Transport System program, an ambitious private initiative to develop technology for use in manned interplanetary space flights and which, if demand exists, could lead to sustainable human settlements On Mars until the long term. This is the main objective for which this system was designed. In 2017, Elon Musk announced that the company had been hired by two private individuals to send them on a Dragon spacecraft on a free return trajectory around the Moon, which could become the first instance of space tourism.
