The Houston Police Department (HPD) was established by the citizens of the city of Houston and exists to provide services to the citizens and residents of the city of Houston.
The mission of the HPD is to enhance the quality of life in the City of Houston by working cooperatively with the public and within the framework of the U.S. Constitution to enforce the laws, preserve the peace, reduce fear and provide for a safe environment.

HPD is committed to building strong relationships within the community (relational policing) and increasing transparency. We have embraced the use of the latest technologies and strategies to reduce crime, improve transparency and enhance accountability.

In an effort to enhance safety, increase our transparency and build stronger ties with the community we are proud to provide our mobile application, HoustonPD. The app is free and gives you access to the latest news and tools to assist your interactions with HPD. You can access alerts, news releases, videos, photos and events within this app. Additionally, you will be linked to our Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Periscope accounts for the most up-to-the minute information regarding the department.
The following features are included in the application:

- Push notifications: Breaking news, major road closures, significant events and crime prevention tips can be pushed to your phone if you opt in
- Commendations: Let us know if you’ve had a noteworthy interaction with a HPD officer
- Maps: Find your nearest HPD station
- News: Read the latest updates regarding major crimes and the activities of the Chief of Police and other command staff members
- Twitter: Follow a link to the department’s twitter page for most up-to-the minute news and activity alerts

- Facebook: Like our page and view posts of our events and watch videos of our latest activities

Allows an application to receive the ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED that is broadcast after the system finishes booting.
