BlackPink debuted on August 8, 2016, with their single titled Square One, which resulted in "Whistle," their first number one song in South Korea. With their commercial success in the first five months, they earned New Artist of the Year at the 31st Golden Disc Awards and 26th Seoul Music Awards.

BlackPink is a female K-pop artist who has topped the Billboard Hot 100, peaked at number 55 with "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du", and on the Billboard 200, peaked at number 40 with an EP titled Square Up. They are the first and only female K-pop group to enter and top Billboard's Emerging Artists charts. ' They are also the first female K-pop group to have four songs on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. At the same time as its release, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" broke the record for the most-watched Korean music video on YouTube in 24 hours, before being overtaken by BTS with their video titled "Idol"
