For those who have been in the pesantren world for a long time, the al-Ajrūmiyya book is not the most difficult book to study. However, this is not the case for those who do not have an Islamic boarding school background. Terms such as mubtadaʾ, nāʾibul fāʾil, rafaʾ, and so on, are not terms that are easily found in Indonesian equivalents. So far, the translation of al-Ajrūmiyya that is widely circulated in Indonesia still uses the perspective of the pesantren. In other words, the Arabic grammatical terms that are abundant in this book are left unattended without any attempt to find their equivalents in Indonesian theory. As a result, it is not surprising that many sentences are convoluted and difficult to understand. For example, the phrase "useful lafaz", or the sentence "Kāna rafaʾ-isim and naṣab-naabar" and other examples are too long to mention one by one in this brief introduction.
There are at least two reasons why the translation of al-Ajrūmiyya and other Arabic grammar books feels so stiff and less accessible to the public. First, there is no agreement among Arabic linguists in Indonesia regarding the similarity of Arabic linguistic terms in Indonesian. The only attempt to Indonesianize these Arabic terms that the writer has found to date is the Dictionary of Linguistic Terms: Indonesian, English, Arabic written by Syamsul Hadi. Unfortunately, despite its great contribution, this method of compiling the dictionary starts with Indonesian and English linguistic terms and then looks for their Arabic equivalents, not the other way around. The second factor is the inclusion of Arabic vocabulary in Indonesian vocabulary. This can be a double-edged knife in the translation process. On the one hand, the absorption of Arabic vocabulary makes it easier to understand the text. But on the other hand, these borrowed vocabulary can also make the translation result confused. The word kalimah for example, the correct translation is not "sentence" but "word". Likewise with the word mufīd, it cannot simply be translated "berfaedah" because the concept of availah in Indonesian is different from fāʾidah in this context.
Driven by the desire to make this popular book more grounded among students and the general public, I finally took the courage to translate the al-Ajrūmiyyah book using a different approach. In this translation process I tried my best to find similarities in Arabic linguistic terms and concepts in the book in Indonesian. These efforts are not without risks. The author fully understands that some terms cannot be found in perfect equivalence in Indonesian because these terms contain meanings and concepts that are completely different from those in the target language. For example, the word mubtadaʾ which I somewhat reductionistically translate as "subject". Whereas the meaning of mubtadaʾ is not exactly the same as the subject, but "the subject in a nominal sentence".
This translation is not intended to compile a complete dictionary of Arabic grammatical terms in Indonesian. This project is also not a completely new endeavor, but an attempt to update what the experts have previously done. Therefore, in the process, I refer to many of the following books:
