Tahajjud (تحجد) means to wake up. Tahajjud prayers or night prayers; Being a supererogatory act of worship, after the obligatory prayers, the importance of the tahajjud prayers is the most virtuous of all the other sunnat and supererogatory prayers.

Tahajjud prayer is sunnat in the sense that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited it. If any of the deeds of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are followed by the servants of Allah, it is Sunnah. And all the acts of worship except the obligatory ones are included in the supererogatory acts of worship. That is why Allah has declared the five daily prayers as obligatory. Apart from this, all the prayers are nafl or extra. So the supererogatory prayer did not come under the command. The Sunnah has been included in the ulama by the scholars. The command is the provision.

The Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is of two types. One is the Sunnah which has been given more importance. Another is that the Sunnah has been proven as an additional Sunnah. Tahajjud is the prayer of this stage. Tahajjud prayer is nafl from this point of view, since it is not fard or wajib. And since the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) performed it, it is Sunnah.
