You have decided that you want a career full of excitement and fun. You know that you are organized, social, and creative. So you decide you want to start your career as a meeting and / or event planner.

I will tell you something you may not want to hear. But, unlike all those other articles promoting false dreams, I'll tell you the truth.

You absolutely cannot, positively, start your own event planning project without at least three to five years (or more) experience.

The good news?

Yes, you can become an event organizer. Yes, it is a fun and exciting job. And no, it does not require any other education or certification. But being an event organizer is much more than just choosing fun décor and great entertainment.

The bad news?

It won't - it can't - happen overnight. Organizing large-scale legitimate events and meetings requires extensive knowledge and years of experience. There could be thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars at stake. Why ask a customer to trust you if you don't have the right experience? And most importantly, why would you do it yourself?

Even if you think you want to start out by organizing smaller events, you must know how to define the venue space, negotiate vendor contracts, organize registration, create itineraries, organize vendors, define listings, etc. Not to mention, you need to know how to charge your services, write legally binding contracts to protect yourself and your vendors, define insurance, and how to manage final billing. Forget those websites telling you, "Yes, you can start your own event planning project today! Take our 2-day course and set it up by Monday!" They are just trying to sell their course or e-book.

Most intelligent and educated people know that anything worthwhile takes little effort. You're smart enough to look into the future and realize that, with hindsight, setting aside the next two or three years to learn about the industry you love is worth your time, in order to ensure that you spend the rest of your work years doing what you enjoy.

Here is the paradox. Lots of people want to get into event planning, but aren't ready to do what it takes to get there. If you really love events, you must be passionate about doing whatever it takes. You should also realize that, as with any job, it is essential to learn from the bottom up.

Here are the pragmatic steps you need to take in order to work towards becoming an event planner.
1. Understand, really understand, that it will take anywhere from one to three years to five years or more to get the experience you need to actually become an event planner (depending on your current experience and how difficult your work is to learn). Make your mistakes a dime a dozen for another scheme. You will thank yourself in the future!

2. Understand that you can still be a part of events, and work any number of jobs in the event planning industry, while learning. Yes, you can start a business in event planning by the end of the month; You just won't be the event planner. Get rid of the need to be the head
