The Apocalypse of Paul is a text from the 4th century AD that is from the apocrypha of the New Testament [1]. There is also an Ethiopian version of the Apocalypse, in which it is the Virgin Mary instead of Paul who receives the vision and is therefore called the Apocalypse of the Virgin.

The text should not be confused with the Gnostic Coptic Apocalypse of Paul, with which it probably has nothing to do. Peter's Apocalypse or Peter's Revelation is an example of a simple and popular text from early 2nd century AD Christianity. It is another example of the so-called apocalyptic literature with Hellenistic tones. The text exists in two incomplete versions of a lost Greek original, one in Koine Greek [1] and the other in Ethiopian [2], which differ widely. The Greek manuscript was unknown until it was discovered during excavations by Sylvain Grébaut at the 1886-1887 station in a desert necropolis in Akhmim, Upper Egypt. The fragment consists of sheets of parchment from a Greek version carefully deposited on the tomb of a Christian monk in the 8th or 9th century AD. The manuscript is currently in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The Ethiopian version was discovered in 1910. Before that, the text was known only by frequent citations in older Christian texts. In addition, some common lost source would be needed to explain the similarities with other apocalyptic writings, such as the Apocalypse of Ezra, the Apocalypse of Paul and the Passion of Saint Perpetual.
